Hummingbird–like a Fairy Bird

They’re like little fairies, so small, so busy, and so territorial!

In the clearest shot, I was able to rest my camera on my printer to get a more stable shot. I did it when he had his back turned to me.

The others were handheld because he could see me when I got close to the window and when I tried to move to the printer to use it as a makeshift tripod, he flew off. In the last, he was resting on the dead part of my neighbor’s tree. It was raining that day and at one point he was shaking out his feathers to get rid of the raindrops.

I finished proofing Heart of the Wolf and sent it back to the editor. The re-release will be out in January. It includes Night of the Wolf, a new novella.Heart of the Wolf

I’m now working on Billionaire Wolf Christmas again. I’m behind. *sigh* But I hadn’t expected to get the edits on Heart of the Wolf, so that put me another day behind.

If I were as fast as the hummingbird, I would whip all those words into order. But writing doesn’t work like that. 🙂

Have a super great day!!!

Swallowtail Butterfly & Birds

Okay, so this morning it’s hot and muggy and I was thinking of running out early to get errands run, but then I saw a hummingbird feeding off one of the flowers. And a tufted titmouse, and I thought, forget the errand running, get the camera out, clean the windows, and take pictures.

You see where my priorities are?

Have a great and wonderful day! 🙂  Running errands is overrated.

YES! I Caught a Hummingbird’s Wings at a Standstill!

Okay, so it’s not the best pictures yet! But I did it!

At 2500 ISO, 4,000, 5.6f

These are two shots I took without changing the ISO and shutter speed. Unfortunately, I had taken 119 great shots of the hummingbird turned toward me, but…the ISO was too low, and I ended up getting only black pictures.

The Blurry Hummingbird

As you can see from the picture in San Diego, these were hummingbirds in captivity and they rested, had plenty of food, and were safe. The hummingbird(s) in my yard are constantly on the move, but I managed to catch one sitting for a moment on a tree in my neighbor’s yard. I don’t know if there’s more than one, but he was flying under my patio cover, chasing away birds at the feeder yesterday like Mighty Mouse on speed.

The blurrier pictures were taken last night, so low light didn’t help, but also, I was moving the camera, trying to capture him as he was not holding still. The one by the fountain, he was doing a good job, but the chair was in the way, yet it sort of framed him too. And the one above the penta flowers, shows the white band around his neck well. It appears the last two photos are of the same hummingbird. The others could be too. He appears to be green with a white band around his throat, and a bit of ruby red at his throat seen in the blurrier picture where he’s facing us. So maybe a ruby-throated hummingbird.

You can think of the blurry ones as watercolors. I planned it that way. 🙂

hummingbird on esperanza (541x800)Unfortunately, this really was watercolorish, but you can see the darker blur of him against the vegetation, and here he was actually sipping from the esperanza flowers. They’re tubular, but I wasn’t sure he was sipping from them because they’re yellow. He seems to like the penta flowers, red, and the firecracker flowers, orange. The blurry ones last night are from him drinking from the rescued firecracker from Ace Hardware before it died. It doesn’t have very many flowers, but he was attracted to it anyway. I went back to get another that was left there, but it appeared they’d thrown the rest of the plants out. 😦

Okay, so far, so good. Went to a chapter meeting, my first, for the area. Really nice group of romance writers. Couple of great speakers. And then was supposed to get together with a friend, but it didn’t work out, so I critiqued chapters for another author, then wrote my word count. So right on track! Today will be busy though. Having the missed date with the friend. We’re supposed to have breakfast now in a couple of hours. Have to figure  out how to get there. And then it’s lunch with my daughter and SIL and Star Trek. Then hopefully I’ll be able to get word count after that. 🙂

So, a wild day ahead. No hummingbird pictures today! 🙂 Have a super wonderful day!

Birds at the Old Place, and New Place

bluebird closeupblue birds 039 (640x427)These pictures show the difference between capturing birds in shots here, compared to at my old house.

cardinals 019 (640x427) (2)blue jays in love (640x462)I couldn’t find the blue jay photo at the other house, but believe me, it wasn’t good. He was in the shrubs and between the window screens, branch and twig clutter and a bird on the move, they were a lot harder to capture. I think in all the years I was there, I only saw one once.

Now what I don’t have here are these kinds of photos.

roadrunner two 002 (640x556) croppedroad runner on barn 005hawk closeup on electric poleThey have hawks here, but thankfully not near my feeders. 🙂 They might have roadrunners, but I’ve never seen one here.

And one of these days I’m going to capture a snowy egret. They fly overhead here, but I never have my camera with me when they do. I had hummingbirds at the other house, but didn’t have my camera with me the couple of times I saw her around the flowers.

hummingbird 014 (3)With clear windows, no screens, up-close feeders, and a perfect “window seat” to capture them as I write away on my books and have my camera next to the keyboard, it’s perfect. AC, no bugs,  fill the feeders, and I’m good to go. At the other house, I also had to climb a kitchen stool to get up high enough to capture the birds on the back patio, which meant half the time they’d fly away.

Okay, so I’m back to work, finished SEAL Wolf Undercover and it’s off to the beta reader and promo blogs are done, and now I’m ready to do the rewrites on Between a Wolf and a Hard Place.

It’s a little cooler this morning because of storms last night so I was going to walk the puppies, but no insect repellent. I was sure I had tons of it. 😦

Have a great day!

A Beautiful Hummingbird!

hummingbird 014 (3)I don’t have any feeders for them or flowers, but this one came to my window after the violent storms that left raindrops on the glass. I was trying to take pictures, but I couldn’t focus because he kept moving, even though he was there it seemed forever peering in, but he was up, down, over. Then he flew around the bird feeders and I caught a couple of shots that didn’t blur too badly.

hummingbird 019He was fascinated by a knothole in the fence.
